2013 Christmas Decor

The tree has been decorated, the wreaths are hung...and the snow well hasn't stopped for a month but hey, Christmas is just around the around so we make the best of it....while dreaming of a beachy Christmas lol.

Todai I am sharing some photos with you of our Christmas décor. Each year I like to take our usual decorations but incorporate a different theme. Last year, was brown paper wrapping and twine. This year our theme is tartan. We went a bit further with the theme this year and incorporated in our Christmas cards, open house invites, tree, wreaths, table settings, etc. We love it! I call it "Tartan Glamour"....cuz a girl still needs her bling!

yes I have high heels and handbags on my tree
All you need is LOVE...and shoes
Our tree all lit up! She's tiny but cute!
Frank Sinatra and Elvis ornaments
my handmade wreath, I'm kinda proud of it

And the Color of the Year is........

It's no surprise giving my line of work that I keep up with popular colors. Every year about this time, Pantone releases there Color of the Year for the coming year. Last year we had Emerald Green. Instantly I started receiving requests from brides wanting to have it as their wedding color. The Color of the Year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid. I'm pretty excited about it too as purple is my favorite color and this is like a purplish pink shade which will be very easy to incorporate into weddings. Here are a few of my favorite pics for items in Radiant Orchid:

Winter Wonderland Candy Bar

This weekend in the middle of -40 temperatures, my company Silva Designs, had a corporate event at the Calgary Zoo that we created a candy bar for. The theme for the party was "Winter Wonderland" with blue, silver, and white as the colors. We decided to incorporate all that into the candy bar. We kept the candy to those 3 colors (not an easy feat!). I used tulle on the table to great a snowy scene and sprinkled silver Christmas leaves around the table for some glam. I also had blue ribbon on all the vases to look cohesive. Check it out!

Yup...It's a Snow Day

Well December just started and it is technically still Fall but Calgary has been hit with yet another blast of winter. This one was fierce though. Monday morning we all woke up to a blizzard. Literally. And not the DQ ice cream version I much rather prefer. We're talking heavy snowfall and high winds. White out conditions. This morning the winds have died down and we're left with huge snow drifts making it near impossible to navigate out of our own street. This girl is having a snow day. Make some cocoa and settle in!

Australian Theme Candy Bar

We have been creating a lot candy bars for weddings in the last 2 years but they are great for so many events too. Just in the past year we have also done them for birthday parties, christmas parties, and even retirement parties.

Today I am featuring a recent setup we did for a retirement party. The gentleman had quite the sweet tooth so it was quite fitting. He and his wife have purchased a home in Australia to move to for retirement so my client wanted to incorporate a nod to Australia without being too cheesy. Here are a some pictures and highlights of how we did it.

Our client mentioned the guest of honor liked gummy candies and chocolate the best so we made sure the favorites were stocked.

Instead of boring labels, I used the outline of Australia for the shape.

As our centerpiece, I created this street sign with names of popular areas, including the one where the guest's house will be.

Recipe: Shirley Temple

You have all seen numerous cocktail recipes over the years here. They are fun to make...and drink! We like to involve kids too in what we do and since you can't give them alcohol we try to find versions safe for them. The virgin Shirley Temple is a famous non-alcoholic and quite tasty. It's Michayla's favorite so we make it often. Here's the easy recipe

  • orange juice
  • grenadine syrup
  • ginger ale
  • maraschino cherry

We like to eyeball on this as its just a fun drink. Pour about 1/2 cup orange juice and fill rest with ginger ale. Add two pumps of syrup DO NOT MIX!!! The syrup will sink to bottom creating the ombre effect for presentation. Then drop a cherry in......annnnd you're done! When ready to drink, mix with straw. Enjoy!

Tutorial: Diaper Napkin Fold

One of my childhood friends is pregnant with her first child due this December and I am super excited to meet the little one! Her sisters threw her a baby shower a couple weeks ago and I helped out on a few things. The mom-to-be is waiting to find out if baby will be a boy or girl so we chose to use tiffany blue and baby pink as the colors for the shower. For the napkins, I wanted to do something cute and different so I came up with this simple fold that looks like a cloth diaper! People loved them so much they didn't want to use them...which defeats the point of a napkin and diaper, no? Everything went great for her baby shower brunch. Here is a tutorial for the diaper napkin fold:

What you need:

  • cloth napkin (we used white 18" squares)
  • ribbon (we alternated pink and tiffany blue)
  • safety pins

fold square once in half

fold that triangle again in half

turn so the 90 degree angle point faces you

flip the top left corner into the centre

then do same for other corner

fold the bottom to the center

make a small bow with some ribbon and thread the safety pin through it and the center of all 3 points

Halloween Past

Okay be much candy is left?! Hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween. I found the adults out there were very creative this year with their costumes. I would love to dress up next year but I don't get invited anywhere for Halloween  HA! We decided to up our decor a bit this year by using the LED spotlights that I use for weddings. It went over really great with lots of great compliments, especially from the little boys in the neighborhood. Next year we'll go full out on the decor! Here is a quick video of the lights in action!

Centerpiece Tutorial

I have a super simple centerpiece to share with you today. We used these for a recent fall wedding. The bride wanted to keep the decor rather clean and simple with just a touch of nature.

The vase is from Ikea, and its actually a serving bowl. I like to look at things differently and how else I can use it. No better place to do this than Ikea!

We added river rocks (find them at a dollar store or Michaels) to the bottom and then filled boel with water, leaving about 2 inches from top.

Trim the stems off 3 large gerbera daisies and place on top of water. Gerbera daisies are the best floating flower. We also added 3 floating candles as in the picture below for the centerpieces on the guest tables. The one above was on the guest book table.

We then took curly willow branches and arranged random pieces around the base of the centerpiece.

Quick, easy, and pretty!

Thanksgiving in BC

I hope everyone had a great Canadian Thanksgiving weekend! The three of us went to Vancouver, BC for a family wedding and got in some sightseeing. It was great meeting more members of Steve's family and getting to show Michayla around a new city. BC is a beautiful place and weather was nice while we were there, no rain! We didn't have a traditional dinner for Thanksgiving but made the best of it by going to ABC Country Restaurant. Steve had the turkey dinner special they had advertised while I opted for the Turkey Schnitzelburger (new tradition?!). Here are some photos from our trip:
